Zentangle® – Focus, Self-Awareness, and Relaxation One Line at a Time +

Zentangle® is a simple yet deeply impactful drawing technique that uses repetitive patterns—called "tangles"—to promote relaxation, concentration, and self-reflection. It requires no artistic skills or prior drawing experience, making it accessible to anyone who wants to calm their mind, focus, or express themselves visually.

For the target group of the Viewpoint: Adult Learning Program in Difficult Life Situation — including adults facing significant life challenges such as incarceration or reintegration—developing inner focus, self-regulation, and stress management is especially important. Zentangle® can be effectively used to support these goals in both individual and group settings. The act of drawing itself reinforces a sense of "I can create," helping to boost confidence and foster a feeling of control.

Zentangle® is not about creating a "beautiful" image — it's about the meditative process, the focus on each line, and the calm that comes from repeating patterns.

Below you'll find downloadable templates, sample tangles, and simple guides to help you take your first steps. Practicing creative attention in this way can become a powerful inner resource—no matter your life circumstances.

What you will need:

  • A blank or colored sheet of paper (you can also use our downloadable templates: here and here)
  • A black pen (felt-tip, fine liner, or gel pen)
  • A pencil (optional — for borders or shading)

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1. Cut or prepare a square drawing tile. You can use a downloadable template or draw your own.
  2. 2. Lightly draw a border with your pencil. Draw a square border about 1 cm inside the edge of your paper.
  3. 3. Draw a “string” to divide the space. Use a curved or flowing line to break the square into smaller sections. These will hold your tangles.
  4. 4. Start filling each section with patterns (tangles). Use dots, lines, curves, circles, spirals, grids—anything that repeats. Let your hand move freely and follow the rhythm of the drawing.
  5. 5. Take your time. Zentangle® is about slowing down. Let the process soothe and center you.
  6. 6. Add shading — or leave it just as it is. If you like, use a pencil to add shading and dimension to your patterns.
